You might not believe it from recent years past, but Sandpoint winters used to bring a lot of snow … enough to include a snow sculpture competition in the annual Sandpoint Winter Festival. Depending on the year and snow cover, a specific site or sites would be chosen in town, and individuals or teams were invited to create the most spectacular snow sculptures they could design.
Walking around town, you’d get a peek at elaborate sculptures vying for the prize. Ask anyone who grew up in Sandpoint or has lived here long enough, and odds are they remember the delight of spying Garfield the cat or some other creation on a trip downtown.
With heavier snowfall predicted this year, maybe we’ll get an opportunity to continue the tradition—even if it’s just in our own front yards.
